BiW Design and Analysis

The objective of this term project was to develop an initial BIW lay-out topology structure which meets performance requirements for bending stiffness, torsion stiffness, front and rear crash energy management, passenger compartment structural integrity, and mass efficiency.

Method:

Initial BIW layout was created. FEA was performed on the B-Pillar using Hyperworks to determine the rotational joint stiffness for the B-Pillar-to-Rocker Joint. This was used in the design calculations to meet the performance requirements for bending stiffness, torsion stiffness, front and rear crash energy management, passenger compartment structural integrity, and mass efficiency.

Several iterations were performed and the dimensions of the beams were changed so that all the design parameters were satisfied.

The final outcome was used to create a 3-D representation of the vehicle’s frame using Solidworks.

Result:

The concept of creating a BIW layout, performing FEA on the BIW and the process flow for designing a prototype were learnt.
